penguins of Antarctica
A PENGUIN peers at a camera on a tripod as its pal p,p,poses for a portrait in front.   The abandoned camera was too much of a temptation for the curious birds who flocked around it to investigate.   In another striking image a lone adult penguin waddles through a crowd of comical-looking fluffy brown chicks.   Baby King penguins - or 'woolies' - are born with distinctive shaggy coats.   The photographs from Antarctica are part of a series celebrating the career of wildlife enthusiast David C. Schultz.   The American has spent years taking breathtaking pictures of the frozen landscape and its inhabitants.   David, 55, has made seven trips to the continent where he fell for the charms of the flightless birds.   During his last trip to an Emperor penguin colony in the Weddell Sea near Snow Hill Island, David spent up to ten hours a day with the animals.   He said: "It very quickly became obvious how inquisitive the Emperors are.   "Anything left on the ice; trekking poles, jackets, backpacks and even camera gear became fair game for closer inspection by these birds.   "I grabbed another camera from my pack and watched as they approached my unmanned camera equipment.   "For about 30 minutes I was entertained and rewarded first by the chicks and then by the adults taking an interest.   "A few of the resulting images could not have been purposely posed any better."   David also captured dazzling polar icecap formations and beautiful Antarctic  sunsets.   Of his most memorable moments from his time in the Antarctic, David said crossing the Drake Passage - where waves reached 16-metres high - was incredible.   He has also been attacked by a bull fur seal on South Georgia Island and accidentally smashed his camera on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s headstone.   However, it is the wildlife that holds the biggest draw for David, originally from Bay City, Michigan.   He said: "One of my favourite images is of a group of fluffy brown King Penguin chicks all surrounding one adult.   "People seeing the image for the first time usually have no idea what they’re looking at, having never seen brown penguins before.   "I enjoy the photograph not only because of the subject and composition but also because it generates questions and conversation.   "During my trip, the days were very long as I was afraid of missing something, even when at sea travelling from one landing site to another.   "The Drake Passage certainly lived up to its reputation as a rather bumpy ride which to me was great.   "I would have been a bit disappointed had the seas been calm as I wanted to get at least a little taste for how bad the conditions could be.   "Not everyone on board shared my enthusiasm."
