Even behind bars, a dog can be womanÕs best friend.
In the Rebibbia womenÕs prison in Rome, 23 prisoners participated in a dog-training course organised by the ConFido association. With the help of expert dog trainers, in the past two years women prisoners have taught dogs to help the disabled. The commands they must obey range from walking next to people in a wheelchair to picking up keys that have dropped, opening a fridge door, gently taking a bottle of water in their jaws, closing a door, and even picking up an accidentally-dropped coin and giving it back to its legitimate owner.
This is a unique project in Europe and the first trained dogs have already been assigned to their new disabled masters. In this picture: the prisoners with their dogs during the training of the dogs. Hundeschule hinter Gittern / Prison inmates train dogs fort he handicapped
*** Local Caption *** 00118532
