A RARE white whale calf has been pictured off the coast of Australia.
The baby whale was spotted by keen photographer, Andrew Brooks, who
was stunned by its unusual
colour.
He said it was swimming and feeding well with its mother in the waters
at Head of Bight in South Australia.
Only two per cent of whales are born white.
A spokesman for the South Australian Whale Centre said: “This is a
Southern
Right Whale. None of the whales born white are albino, it is due to a
genetic disposition.
“It will become darker with age, but will always be much paler than
other
whales. It will remain fair, a silvery grey colour, instead of black.”
She added: “Only about two per cent of whale calves born are white.
“It is quite rare – certainly not common.”
Simon Clark, from the Department for Environment and Heritage said:
“We are
lucky to see one of these a season.
“Sometimes we see none.”
