TRY AND GET MY BEST ANGLE: SPECTACULAR WHALE BREACH IS CAPTURED BY TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS ON TWO SEPARATE BOATS By Dale Maycock It’s not every day you see a whale breaching within metres of your boat but two photographers from two separate ships have captured the exact same moment on camera. Seen bursting out of the water, the huge whale sends a surge of water droplets high into the air merely metres away from the edge of a boat full of tourists. But although the spectacular leap was photographed from a distance, by Californian, Jodi Frediani, 65, the Captain of ship, Giancarlo Thomae, AGE, also managed to snap the encounter from a much closer angle. Taken from a mere 25 metres away, at Monterey Bay in California, Giancarlo was so close he even managed to photograph the grooves in the whale calf’s skin as well as the barnacles growing on its body. However, this is definitely one whale that enjoys the limelight as the youngster breached a whopping seventy times in a single hour that day. After rocking the boat in already choppy waters, passengers on the boat were astounded and a little shook up by their up close encounter with the boisterous whale, who already has a reputation for its impressive acrobatics. Giancarlo said: “I noticed I was the one on top of the Sanctuary Boat, wearing the red sweater in Jody Freidani's shots. “The whale in the picture is very friendly and has a reputation for breaching near boats and kayaks in the Monterey Bay on a regular basis. “The wake of the splash did rock the boat a little and the weather was already rough that day. “The juvenile humpback breached over seventy times in a single hour that day. “It is a very friendly and playful calf and have photographed it many time, although maybe not quite this close.” ENDS
