FANCY A TAKE AWAY? LAZY PELICAN MAKES A MEAL OF ATTEMPT TO STEAL OTHER BIRDS' FISH
By Jack Williams
A lazy pelican tries to steal a fish from another bird - but ends up in a flap after making a total meal of its effort.
The cheeky creature's attempts were thwarted as time after time the swifter osprey left the bird red-faced.
Photographer John Qiu captured the pelican's efforts as it gave chase but ended up face-planting the lake in South Bay, Los Angeles, USA.
John, 55, revealed white pelicans are rare in urban areas which is what initially drew him to take the pictures of the bird.
They are skilled at fishing near the water's surface but because there weren't many fish at this lake it had resorted to stealing for dinner.
John, an investment manager, said: "I've never seen a pelican trying to snatch a fish directly from an osprey's talons.
"A few times I've seen an osprey drop its fish a couple of feet above the water while a pelican is closing in and the pelican picks the fish up.
"So this seemed to be the pelican's strategy, to force the osprey to give up its fish before collecting it.
"The pelican was only able to get close to the osprey while it was taking off.
"But all in all the slower and heavier pelican failed to gain anything from the osprey and ended up with nothing."
