By Lauren Campbell & David Aspinall These hilarious photos show a pair of jackals trying – and failing – hard at catching their prey. The two tenacious hunters stalk a herd of sand grouse as they drink from a watering hole in the African desert. As the prey take flight, so does one of the jackals, leaping into the air to try and catch a stray grouse. Hilariously, the jump was made a second too late and the crafty critter completely face plants the desert floor. Photographer Corlette Wessels captured the amazing images by focusing on waterholes at the Kgalagadi Park, South Africa. The 41-year-old South African snapper said: “Just sitting and watching these animals was not only awesome but, at times, hilarious. “I had so many laughs when they missed and landed face first either in the sand or the water. “It all happened so quickly in real time that I enjoyed them so much more at looking back at the pictures in slow motion.” Corlette has been photographing African wildlife near her Johannesburg, South Africa, home for the last eight years.
