Now that's one angry angry hippo! These furious beasts clearly weren't happy
about a pack of wild dogs picnicing on their patch.
Photographed in South Africa in the early morning - at peak feeding time - by
game ranger Tristan Dicks, the series of photos capture the moment the pack of
wild dogs, chased an impala into the water, only to upset the slumbering
hippos.
The hippos defended their watering hole for more than two hours until the dogs
were organised enough to get their hard-earned meal.
The impala didn't survive in the end in trying to get away from the canines
but for those watching it made for an amazing sight.
Tristan, 26, has been taking photos for four years, whilst working as a game
ranger at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.
Tristan, originally from Johannesburg, said: "We were witnessing a once in a
lifetime sighting and how amazing the will power of animals can be.
"Prey animals, like the impala, often use water as a means to escape predators.
"The dogs tried to swim to get the impala causing the commotion and upsetting
the hippos.
"Hippos can be fiercely territorial and will defend their area if they feel the
pod are being threatened by a predator.
"The thing that makes it unusual is that a hippo and wild dog interaction is
very rare as hippo are not on the menu for wild dogs.
"The only reason these two were interacting is because of the impala trying to
use water to save its life.
"Animals will do everything they can to survive so these kind of struggles do
happen but to be able to witness them is such a rarity.
"Wild dogs are an endangered species and are themselves a rarity for
safari-goers."
The South African photographer credited a stroke of luck that helped him
capture the images.
Tristan said: "It was just place right time and the more you are out there the
more chance there is to get rare sightings like this.
"It also helps to have some decent equipment and my trusty canon did not let me
down!"
