THIS multicoloured turtle seems to really have come out of its shell.
But unfortunately these bright shades are not light-hearted art but the result of a callous graffiti attack.
The eastern box turtle would have been an easy target for predators if it had stayed in the wild.
Instead, the little female - who was pregnant - was rescued by staff at the Wildlife Centre of Virginia, USA.
Staff there believe those behind the attack brushed different shades of nail polish onto the shell.
They then scrawled 'Sheldon' onto the crest before 'signing off' with the initials SKR and BDM.
Staff, who believe the turtle is an abandoned pet, have been busy trying to scrub the graffiti from the shell but it is proving difficult.
Amanda Nicholson, director of outreach, said: "We're doing short scrub sessions every day. We're seeing progress, but I think it will take a couple of weeks to get fully cleaned."
The female was also found to have an injured leg scanned by radiograph - which revealed she was carrying five eggs.
If she does not lay the eggs within a few days staff will give administer a drug to INDUCE her.
They are appealing for information from the public for more information on the turtle as otherwise they will not be able to release it into the wild.
Amanda added: "Some young girls may have thought that painting this turtle, or keeping it as a pet, would be fun – and probably did not know that they were condemning the turtle to a life in captivity.
"Turtles have very small home ranges and it’s essential for us to release turtles back in their home range.
"They do very poorly when they are relocated to a different area.
"Many species of turtles, including eastern box turtles, have declining populations, which is why we want to keep every healthy turtle in the wild."
